Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for a permanent position of Internal Telephone Claims Officer within Risk and Insurance Services, part of the Legal, Municipal Clerk & External Affairs Business Unit. Under the direction of the Manager of Risk and Insurance Services, the Internal Claims Officer is responsible for the investigation, negotiation and settlement of routine claims submitted by the public to HRM or by HRM. In addition, this position will be responsible to provide support to the Claims Officers as may be required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide prompt, courteous, accurate and fair claims service to all external and internal stakeholders.
- Initiate and resolve subrogation/recovery claims for damage to Municipal infrastructure and assets.
- Arrange for vehicle/asset appraisals and/or assign claims to independent adjusters as may be required.
- Adjustment and settlement of physical damage claims and Third-Party property damage presented to HRM from outside parties.
- Generate and maintain adequate insurance reserves as per adjusting best practices.
- Settle claims within delegated authority.
- Input and maintain accuracy of data in various databases including iVos, SAP and Hansen systems.
- Responds to and directs inquiries on Division Matters, over the telephone and through correspondence with accuracy, professionalism and enthusiasm.
- Assists Claims Officers with claim processing as may be required due to workload.
- Ensures a high level of confidentiality understanding that claims may involve the confidential and personal financial information and medical information of HRM residents and employees.
- Report to the Manager of Risk and Insurance any potential employee disciplinary issues as a result of claim investigation.
- Contributes to team activities and goals as well as continuous improvement initiatives.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma required, post secondary education is preferred.
- Have or willing to obtain Chartered Insurance Professional designation (CIP) within 2 years of employment
- Minimum of three years’ experience in the insurance industry is required.
- Experience using SAP, iVos or other claims management software and Hansen systems will be considered an asset.
- Proficient in the use of computer software in a Windows environment, including SAP and MS Office
- In depth knowledge of various statutes and legislation that govern the operations of HRM and/or insurance industry
