12hrs Sat/Sun Community Support Worker [Canada]


 What to expect in the role

You will be working with a team in our "Community Access" program. You will be part of a team of approx. 30 people. Though you will likely work directly with one or two other staff members on these weekend shifts. As part of this team you will typically be supporting individuals in their homes' or in the community, though occassionally you may be in our main facility in the NE as well. This role will require flexibility as you may be supporting individuals who require street level outreach, and may not consistently follow a set routine. You will need to be ready to adapt to suit the needs of the individual you are supporting.
Individuals you support may have diagnoses such as Mental Health concerns, Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, developmental delays, Autism, Down Syndrome or Moderate Dementia. In this role you also may face behaviours of concern. Each individual has a personalized support plans that you will follow. These individualized plans are designed to address specific needs, and to support each person in working towards and achieving their goals.

Daily routines and responsibilities will include the following:

  • Provide medical, technological, environmental, emotional, physical, and behavioural support
  • Drive to meet clients, or transport clients to and from activities or appointments
  • Accompany individuals to activities, and assist with daily needs/responsibilities such as employment, physical activity, grocery shopping, swimming, house chores etc.
  • Support clients with needs that could include personal care, g-tubes, or lifts
  • Participate in the research, development, and implementation of client programs
  • Learn the behavioural support plans to better understand client needs
  • Complete required client documentation and/or reporting effectively
Schedule & Rate of Pay:
This is a permanent position at 12 hours/week. The schedule will be Saturday & Sunday with core hours from 11:00AM - 5:00PM. The starting hourly rate for this position ranges from $21.19/hour - $22.64/hour depending on experience. Mileage is reimbursed at $0.50/km. Cost shared benefits will begin after 3 months probation. This role includes 4% vacation pay plus an additional 5 flex days after 3 months employment. All regular staff are eligible to pick up additional casual hours at any of our Group Homes, or with any clients who have scheduling outside of their scheduled hours if they are interested.

Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum of a Canadian Certificate/Diploma in the Human Services sector (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Intermediate computer skills - we use multiple programs and softwares daily that you will be expected to learn and adapt to
  • Valid class 5 driver license and a reliable vehicle with minimum $2,000,000 liability insurance by time of hire
  • Must be comfortable with swimming and being around pets
  • Comfortable supporting a variety of individuals with different abilities, diagnoses, or behaviours, some of which can be intimidating
Preferred Requirements

  • 1-2 years relevant experience in the human services field is highly preferred
  • Familiarity with high behavioural individuals and individuals with mental health concerns/challenges is preferred
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health challenges
  • Experience/exposure working in homeless/housing sector
  • Current trainings including First Aid/CPR, Medication Administration, Non-violent crisis intervention, Abuse Prevention Response Protocol, Positive Behaviour Supports, etc.
